Blending in while traveling is a tool used by the smart and seasoned traveler. Not only is it a safety precaution to avoid being a target for pick-pockets and other unwanted attention, you will also be less likely to get ripped off. And I bet you’ll might find it easier to make local friends.

While looking like a local and blending in are possible in some destinations, I think one’s appearance and inherent “foreign-ness” are unavoidable in others. When appearance can’t be helped, one’s attitude, ability to engage and authenticity are paramount. I realize this isn’t something you can buy, but a quick smile and an engaging demeanor can go a long way
